Digital Safes History
The company was first established in 1880 as Thomas Henry Ltd. It specialised in light engineering, and expanded into locksmithing and gunsmithing. The original premises were at the corner of Police & Princes Streets.
Thomas Leahy Begg purchased the firm between 1923 and 1928. He changed the name to T.L. Begg Ltd. The company continued to expand, and added lawnmower servicing along with the sales of fishing, shooting and camping equipment to its activities.
By the mid 1940s Thomas had three of his sons working in the business, and it had been renamed to T.L. Begg and Sons Ltd. The firm had now shifted to 399 Princes St, about three buildings along from its original building. The next shift was in 1951, when the business moved to 401 Princes St. During this time it became more specialised in locksmithing, sporting goods and gunsmithing.
After Thomas’ death, his sons Archie, Ken and Bob ran the business until the early 1970s, when it was taken over by Archie’s son, Bob Begg jnr, and Bob snr’s son, Tony Begg.
In 1983 the business moved to 80 Filleul Street. It was during this time the business concentrated on locksmithing and sporting goods.
In 1990 Chris Begg (grandson of Thomas Leahy Begg) bought out the locksmith division to make it a stand-alone enterprise from the sporting goods division, which was headed by Bob Begg jnr and Tony Begg. The sporting goods division become a Stirling Sports franchise.
In October 1997 the locksmithing division moved to its current premises, 240 Hanover Street. The move was a historic one as it meant the locksmithing division could stand alone. The sporting goods operation moved into the Meridian (by this time it was owned by Tony and his wife Heather). Tony and Heather sold the sports store soon after to join Begg Security Group.
